Morecambe Bay: A History

Share

Morecambe Bay is steeped in history with many locals and visitors alike taking to the beaches and pebbly shores to enjoy the warm summer weather by the sea.

It has always been a popular seaside resort, with a vibrant festival scene and links to various popular celebrities, such as Eric Morecambe, Dame Thora Hird and motorcycle legend John McGuinness. Although it’s not as popular as it used to be back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, there are still a variety of attractions that are well worth a visit, especially if you are planning to stay with us at our Bay View Holiday Park!

Eric Morecambe Statue

Depicting one of the UK’s favourite comedians, the Eric Morecambe statue was erected in 1999 and was unveiled by the Queen herself.

Capturing the wonderful character of the man himself – who took his stage name from the town that he loved – the Eric Morecambe statue is a must see for anyone visiting the Morecambe area. It is an incredibly popular landmark; with many people queuing to take a picturesque photograph with the larger than life statue against the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District!

As Eric is positioned on the promenade, it makes for a beautiful walk to and from him, as well as being in the perfect spot for access to the town centre amenities.

Winter Gardens

One of the most iconic buildings to adorn the Morecambe promenade is the Victoria Pavilion, more commonly known now as the Winter Gardens.

Despite its name, the Winter Gardens is actually an event venue which has been partially renovated for use as a live music venue and theatre, and plays home to a variety of tours – including ghost tours!

It was originally built in 1897 for use as a ballroom, but it also included a number of seawater baths. These were all demolished or removed , but some remnants of this building’s incredible past can still be seen today during tours – just keep a look out for those ghosts who are said to roam the stage!

The Midland Hotel

The Midland Hotel is another of the most iconic buildings that can be seen on Morecambe’s seafront. It is a Grade II listed building, and it underwent a dazzling regeneration in 2008.

Its beautifully white exterior stands out even on the gloomiest of days, and it’s a great spot to pop in and experience a true dining wonder– with a delicious afternoon tea!

With stunning views across the bay, there’s no better place to devour a cream tea!

The Sunsets

If you need one single reason to visit Morecambe bay, it would definitely have to be the sunsets. No matter where you find yourself in the area, head towards the promenade near sunset and you will be in for a real treat.

With an array of vibrant colours, you would be forgiven for thinking you are in a tropical country, not little old Morecambe. Watch as the sun sinks lower “into” the water and have those cameras ready; you’ll want to be sure to capture this beautiful moment!

There’s so much more that Morecambe to offer, but we think it’s much nicer if you come and find them out for yourselves – it’s more of a surprise that way!
