Family cottage holidays are a great way to reconnect without modern-day distractions like social media, work and Netflix! If you’re rained in, or you just want to spend some quality downtime in your cottage with your family, there are plenty of fun, family-friendly games and activities to keep you all entertained. Here is a list of some of our favourites.
Card games
The first rule of travel is: never leave home without a pack of cards in your suitcase.
Cards can provide hours of family-friendly fun. From simple games like snap and go fish, to more complex games such as cheat and blackjack, there are plenty of games to choose from to keep children of all ages entertained.
If you have a lot of time, why not search for a new game and learn it as a family?
Check out this list of standard playing card games if you need a bit of inspiration!
Family-friendly Board games
Just like standard playing cards, if you have kids, it’s a sensible idea to travel with a board game or two. And if you’re worried about taking up valuable suitcase space, don’t worry, many stores offer travel-size board games that fit nicely in your bag. Our favourite travel board games include:
- Catan dice game
- Codenames
- Uno
- Connect 4
- Scattergories
- Chess
- Checkers
- Scrabble
Dance, Dance, FREEZE!
If the kids have cabin fever and need to blow off some steam, you can’t get much better than Dance, Dance, FREEZE!
Someone will need to be in charge of the music, pressing play and letting everyone dance around the room. Encourage everyone to dance as freely as they want, so they can let out all their energy.
When the music stops, everyone must freeze in the most imaginative position possible. The best pose in each round gets a point, and the first family member to get 10 points wins the game.
To make it even more fun, you can choose themes for the pose in each round. For example, “this round, the theme is the best superstar pose”, giving points to the person that best embodies the theme.
Charades and Pictionary
Charades and Pictionary are family classics, but they’re especially good for games in a cottage with large family groups.
If you have access to pens and paper, split the family into two teams, with each member drawing an image that the rest of their team has to guess.
If you have an odd number of people, have one person be the game master – their job will be to give the same drawing clue to each team in a time trial to see who guesses first!
If your family is less into drawing and more into acting, Charades is always a crowd favourite.
You can either split the family into teams to play for points or have a free-for-all with everyone responsible for their own points.
Scavenger hunt
Family cottage breaks offer something unique – cosy homes with plenty of hidden corners to hide things in. To pull off your cottage scavenger hunt, you have two options.
- If you can, try and slip out to the local corner shop to buy some sweets and chocolates to hide.
- If leaving the family cottage isn’t an option, choose a few items from around the house and make a list.
Scavenger hunts will provide hours of fun for the whole family, and the best part is, you can make as many rounds as you want!
Entertainment facilities at our holiday parks
Many of our cottage locations are close to our holiday parks that have entertainment facilities on site, which are great for family cottage holidays! So if you want to get out of the cottage without having to leave the area, our facilities boast a range of activities including bowling, swimming and snooker… just check your cottage description page to see which facilities are available at your venue.
