Share

Explore family-friendly walks in The Ribble Valley!

The Ribble Valley is a wonderful part of the country to visit, with some fantastic scenery, picture-perfect villages and tranquil countryside. When you visit, you will surely hope to get outdoors and enjoy some walks, but if you have the whole family in tow, you may want to carefully consider which routes you choose.

There are plenty of family-friendly walks that you can enjoy when visiting the area, so take a look at some of our favourite routes and get out and about with the whole family so you can explore the wonderful Ribble Valley.

Slaidburn Village Trail

Length: 0.8 miles; time: 20 minutes

This is a simple short stroll around the village of Slaidburn so it is suitable for anyone who just fancies getting a breath of fresh air. The village is particularly pretty and features a number of buildings from the 18th and 19th century that you can admire along the route. Walking alongside the River Hodder, you’ll have plenty to look at as you walk through the village. You can also make a stop or two along the way, including the Hark to Bounty Inn where you can grab a drink or tuck into some classic pub grub.

Pendle Hill from Downham

Length: 6.3 miles; time 4.5 hours

Pendle Hill is a particularly famous landmark in the local area, being notoriously linked with the story of the Pendle witches. You can take a walk up Pendle Hill from the nearby village of Downham, giving you the opportunity to get some great views along the way. The incline may make this route unsuitable for pushchairs, but it should provide just enough of a challenge for older children. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be able to take in the spectacular views across the Ribble Valley.

The Ribble Valley from Sawley

Length: 9 miles; time: 5.5 hours

As this walk isn’t a short one, it may be better suited to older children rather than young kids. There is a bit of mixed terrain, so it isn’t pushchair-friendly as you will need to walk through fields and wooded areas. However, if you choose to take on this route, you will be richly rewarded with some great views and beautiful sights. The walk begins at Sawley River bridge and takes you all the way up towards Gisburn before bringing you back down again.

You’ll get plenty of views of the river and the surrounding countryside along your way and there are plenty of places to stop for a quick sit down or for a nibble of your packed lunch.

When you visit the Ribble Valley, there are plenty of walking routes to try out so you can see a bit of the local area at your own pace. At Holgates Ribble Valley, you’ll find the perfect place to stay while you explore this beautiful part of the UK countryside. Whether you buy or hire a holiday home, or even pitch up your touring caravan, there are a number of facilities to take advantage of, such as our bar and games room. Best of all, you’ll be ideally situated to get out and see some of the incredible sights of the Ribble Valley.
