We’re extremely lucky to be situated around the beautiful North Lancashire and South Cumbrian coastline. With some of the most beautiful views in the country and an award-winning sunset, there’s no place in the UK we’d rather be.
As we’re somewhat biased in our love for this stretch of coastline, we’re always willing to shout about all the fantastic places that are dotted along it which are perfect for mini days out for the whole family.
So, if you’re staying in one of our holiday parks or are simply looking for something to do in the North Lancashire or South Cumbria area, why not stop off and explore these areas:
Grange-over-Sands overlooks Morecambe bay towards Morecambe and Heysham, giving beautiful views on a clear day - be sure to take a few snaps if you can!
While there is no beach here, despite being on the coast and Morecambe Bay, you can take a leisurely stroll down the promenade, which conveniently passes the train station if you’re planning a day trip by railway. There are a couple of cafes along the way, making for welcome stop-offs on your walk.
Just outside of Grange-over-Sands in Cark-in-Cartmel, you’ll find Holker Hall, a beautiful stately home which is open to the public to go in and have a look around. The venue often holds events, so it’s always worth checking what’s on if you’re in the area
Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Arnside is an incredible little village which overlooks where the Kent River enters Morecambe Bay and the view from the promenade is unbelievable, especially at sunset when the whole bay lights up bright orange.
There are plenty of shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes lining the promenade, including the famous fish and chip shop which is perfectly situated if you want to take advantage of the beautiful promenade and eat your fish and chips outdoors with a view.
For those who love walking, there’s Arnside Knott which you can take on. With beautiful panoramic views of Arnside, the Lakeland hills looming in the distance and plenty of wildlife to keep you company, it’s definitely worth the climb!
On the other side of Arnside Knott, you’ll find the small, idyllic village of Silverdale, which is home to the RSPB’s Leighton Moss nature reserve.
This reserve is one of the best known in the area and is a must-visit if you’re an avid lover of wildlife. From otters to marsh harriers, butterflies to wader birds, this natural reed-bed reserve is a hive of wildlife activity all year round.
Silverdale’s shoreline is a mix of beach and rock which spans down to an area known as Jenny Brown’s Point. This area of headland gives incredible panoramic views of Morecambe Bay, and makes for an interesting walk from Silverdale beach. There are many different walks, including circular walks around Silverdale which include this area, so if you’re a lover of the outdoors, be sure to check it out
Probably the most famous coastal town in the area, Morecambe has always been known for it’s beautiful views across the bay to the Lakeland fells, it’s stunning sunsets and local delicacies of potted shrimps and cockles.
It’s a great family destination, with attractions such as Happy Mount Park and Pleasureland perfect for entertaining the kids. The promenade also gives access to many different sections of the beach, as well as kids playparks dotted along the seafront, too.
There are plenty of shops, pubs and cafes along the promenade, so it’s easy enough to find somewhere to stop off for refreshments, and if you’re missing the city feel, Lancaster is only a 20-minute bus ride away.
Visit the famous Eric Morecambe statue, have afternoon tea in the beautiful Midland Hotel or wander right down the prom and end up in Heysham village where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful spot!
We love the area that we’re based in here at Holgates, and with parks scattered all over the North Lancashire and South Cumbrian coastline, it’s never been easier to visit these little gems and have a comfortable base to head back to after a long day of exploring.
