Memory Lane

To celebrate 50 years of Holgates here are photos and quotes
from people who have come and stayed with us in the past...

Your sites 50th anniversary promted me to think about our early days at Silverdale. My parents rented a van in the summer of 1958. At the end of the season they bought the van and had it moved to our present pitch in Pine Grove. I first visited the site at Easter 1959.

The old gypsy caravan was on the present childrens play area and there was one toilet block at the top of the field. Lighting was by gas and I imagine that the greatest sales in the shop were for gas mantles. They were the flimsiest things and couldn't stand being hit by a flying cushion.

My general impression of those years was of elderly people in dark clothes which were thick and warm and anoraks - all pre-continental holidays and the changes that followed.

The other lasting memory is of the open air swimming pool. There were thin, blue children with teeth chattering and shivering with cold being rubbed down with coarse towels to get the blood circulating again. The mothers in thick cardigans were usually telling the children "not to be so soft".

The four generations of our family have had great pleasure from our caravans at Silverdale. We have seen a lot of changes - I would say for the better. I hope that the younger ones will continue to enjoy their visits to the site.

Congratulations on the 50th anniversary and on managing the changes over the years. Thanks and best wishes to all the family for the future
